Wilhelm Ostwald High School

The Wilhelm-Ostwald-Gymnasium (short: WOG; actually: Wilhelm-Ostwald-Schule, Gymnasium of the City of Leipzig ) in the Leipzig district of Lößnig offers an in- depth education in the mathematical and scientific profile . The only German TSA adapter is currently at the school .

history

In 1985, two special classes (grade 9) with a total of 37 students were founded at what was then EOS Humboldt . Two years later the school moved into a school building of the former 55th POS "Bertolt Brecht" in Lößnig in the south of Leipzig. Volker Petruschke took over the management of the now seven classes.

In 1989 the school got its current name. In the presence of Wilhelm Ostwald's granddaughter Gretel Brauer, the official name certificate was handed over and the bust was unveiled, which can still be found in the foyer of the school today.

Brigitte Heink became the headmistress in 1992. The school got the status of a high school. An adjoining school building of the former 53rd POS "Johannes R. Becher" was included in the use of the grammar school. In 1994, the mathematical-scientific profile was confirmed by the Saxon State Ministry for Culture in Dresden .

Working groups

The school has a large student choir. There are regular sports groups in the sports sector. Schoolchildren take part in sports competitions such as “Youth trains for the Olympics” or the annual school marathon, in which the school has won first place several times.

For several years, a bilingual chemistry group has been offered from grade 9 .

The school also has its own school club where students can hang out during breaks and after class. In order to organize the school club, students can help shape the school club in the full-day program of the same name.

Entrance exam

Due to the in-depth instruction in math and science subjects, an aptitude test takes place in which all students recommended for high school can take part. A maximum of 96 (but usually 72) students of each year can be accepted due to limited capacities.

Data

The school consists of two school buildings, a gym and a sports field.

A year of secondary level I usually consists of three classes, each year consists of four classes (most recently 2018/19). The class size is normally a maximum of 24 students.

Since 2000 the school has hosted the largest active European TSA chapter. Every year a team consisting of around eight students and two teachers flies to the USA to take part in the National Conference and to present the research and work results of the past year.

Secondary level II

Unlike at other Saxon schools, students are required to take three advanced courses instead of the usual two. Furthermore, it must mathematics as advanced course be selected. In the Abitur, at least mathematics must be taken as a performance course examination.

In order to prepare the students for writing scientific papers , there is an obligation to write a scientific-practical paper that can be included in the Abitur as a special learning achievement (BeLL).

From the 2008/2009 school year onwards, based on a decision by the Ministry of Education in Saxony, it is no longer possible to complete a biology performance course. As one of the few high schools, the WOG has received an exception, so that biology continues to be taught five hours per week.

Redevelopment

On June 19, 2007, it was decided to renovate the high school. The work was carried out from 2009 to 2011 and affected the entire school grounds, two school buildings, the gymnasium and the outdoor facilities. According to Mayor Thomas Fabian, "both school buildings and the sports hall in Willi-Bredel-Strasse [...] were in their original, unrefurbished condition from 1972. Defects in fire protection, thermal insulation, noise protection, sun protection and outdated building services make a fundamental renovation necessary". The renovation was completed on November 1, 2011 and the 8th – 10th Classes are back in Loessnig.
