Since 2004 the school has been called "Saxon State High School for Music Carl Maria von Weber" and accepts students from the fifth grade. In addition to the Saxon central high school diploma, graduates also take a final musical examination according to the criteria for admission to a music college . In addition to orchestral instruments, recorder, guitar and jazz music have also been part of the musical offer since 2004.

The Saxon State High School for Music is an all-day school . 75 boarding school places are available for foreign students, which are located in two new buildings in the park of Villa Rothermund. In 2010, the school moved into the building in Kretschmerstrasse (formerly Martin-Andersen-Nexö-Gymnasium ), also built by Karl Emil Scherz at the beginning of the 20th century and extensively expanded and restored from 2007 to 2010 for high school lessons .
