history

On November 29, 1906, the foundation stone for the "Gröba elementary school" was laid on what was then Georgplatz, which was inaugurated on April 1, 1908. In 1914 the extension along Heinrich-Lorenz-Straße was completed. Towards the end of the Second World War , the school served as a central air raid shelter and to accommodate refugees, and in April 1945 as a hospital for the wounded of the Red Army . On September 1, 1945, school operations were resumed after an interruption of several months. In 1948 the school was divided into the two August Bebel Schools I (old building, for Gröba students) and II (new building, for students from Merzdorf and Forberge ). In 1949, the August Bebel School I was renamed " Friedrich Engels School". In 1955 both schools were merged to form the "Friedrich Engels Middle School". In 1958, 1,184 students studied at the school. In the school year 1963/1964 the first 7th grade was set up as a special class.

In the school year 1965/66 the special school "Friedrich Engels" was founded with a physical-technical direction. It was one of several special schools of mathematics, mathematics and science, or technical direction in the GDR . In 1986/1987 these were transferred to the uniform school type of special schools in mathematics, science and technology , of which more were founded until 1989, so that in 1989 the Riesa Special School was one of fourteen special schools in mathematics, science and technology. Together with the boarding school , the “Friedrich Engels” special school was located in the upper part of the building. In 1990 the special school was renamed the " Werner Heisenberg School". Since the school year 1992/93 it has been called "Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium". The new opening was on August 20, 1992.

In 1953 the first boarding school was set up in the basement. In 1960 the dry toilet in the "old building" was demolished and the teaching pool built on it, which was later replaced by a gym. In 1978, 1984 and 1985 further boarding rooms were built. Today these are used as exam rooms.
