history

Merzdorf was first mentioned in 1275 as Mertinesdorff. The place name was changed several times, so the place was called in 1277 (Johannes de) Martinisdorf , 1321 Mertindorf , 1342 Mertinsdorf , 1416 Mertinsdorf , 1445 Mertnisdorf , 1457 Mertinstorff , 1501 Merczdorff , 1521 Mertzdorf , 1552 Merzdorf , 1791 Merzdorf, bey Oschatz and Merzdorf b. Riesa in 1875. Merzdorf is one of the few places in the area that has a German name. The place name probably indicates the Martin patronage of one of the neighboring churches and is to be interpreted as Martin's village. Prehistoric and early historical legacies indicate that the area was settled at an early age. To the east of the town center is a site of the Germanic Latène period , as well as a Slavic settlement . From the Döllnitzufer opposite, 200 meters to the east, there is also a known habitation of the Germanic peoples from the imperial era . Merzdorf was mentioned in 1277 as a manor and in 1445/1447 as a knight 's seat . On August 9, 1416 Friedrich von M. sat there. On June 2, 1459, the elector enfeoffed the brothers Hans and Albrecht and all other family members with the upper and lower seat and the village of Merzdorf. The family is certainly old colonist nobility. In 1445 Merzdorf belonged to the Oschatz Care , later from 1606 to the Oschatz Office . In 1445 the manor Merzdorf and the Vorwerk Pochra provided two knight horses in the Oschatzer care. The von Merzdorf family remain in the manor until Bastian von Pflugk takes over Strehla in 1521 , under which the manor sinks to Vorwerk. The von Pflugk family managed Merzdorf until the end of the 16th century. Around 1600 the Hans Heinrich von Gaudlitz family lived on Merzdorf, there are five houses and the mill. Around 1621/1628 Christian von Holzendorf lived there and then the von Starschedel family until 1801. In 1722, Merzdorf, Pochra, Großrügeln and Reussen belonged to the manor . The manor became official under the von Starschädel family and registered with the Vorwerk Pochra on April 4, 1742. In 1801 Johann Christian Hähnel, later Baron von Odeleben, bought the manor. In 1816 the manor belonged to a manor, a tenant apartment, farm buildings and a brewery. The sheep farm included 650 sheep. 1724 buys from the bankruptcy of his heirs Hch. Rittner to the manor. In the years 1764, 1816 and 1843 Merzdorf was still administered by the Oschatz Office until the administration was transferred to the Riesa court office in 1856 and to the Großenhain office in 1875 . The Saxon rural community order of 1838 gave the village independence as a rural community. Originally the Merzdorf children went to school in Gröbain until their own school building was built in 1892, which was expanded in 1898. In 1963 the Otto Grotewohl School was established on Merzdorfer Straße and in 1971/72 a school on Alleestraße.

There is evidence that Merzdorf was parish off to Gröba from 1539 and from 1930 the district belongs to the Riesa-West parish. In 1925, 619 inhabitants of Merzdorf were Evangelical-Lutheran , 1 inhabitant was Catholic and 90 inhabitants belonged to other denominations. From 1925 Merzdorf was incorporated into Riesa.

The former cardboard mill was popularly known as the paper mill. This mill property belonged to the manor in 1600, as did a brewery and a brickworks, which no longer exist today. In 1815 the mill is mentioned as a grinding and oil mill with a brandy distillery . In the 19th century, the mill was converted into a cardboard factory that operated until 1941. In 1927 the General Saxon Settlers Association built the first 25 houses in the districts of An der Döllnitz, Am Krautgarten and on Wiesenstrasse and Blumenstrasse. Just as the neighboring Gröba grew into an industrial location, Merzdorf grew into a residential location. From 1935 to 1936, the so-called peripheral settlements on Rosa-Luxemburg-, Wilhelm-Busch- and Thomas-Mann-Straße were mostly built as cellarless houses due to the low savings of the workers who lived there. These houses could only be improved gradually through renovations and additions. In 1936/37 extensive housing estates were built on Am Saugrund and Am Kirschberg, in which mainly families with children from the Zeithain camp, which was to be used for military purposes, were settled, as well as the apartment blocks on Reußener Straße. Saxons came after the Second World War in the Soviet zone of occupation and later the GDR . After the territorial reform in 1952 , Merzdorf was assigned to the Riesa district in the Dresden district . From 1954, the district expanded further to include the large settlement complexes on the other side of the Döllnitz on Alleestrasse and some of its cross streets through the workers' housing cooperative of VEB Rohrkombinat and VEB Gebäudewirtschaft. Along the Weidaer Straße and the neighboring streets, the Merzdorfer Straße and at the Merzdorfer Wäldchen, private homes were added from 1972. In addition, the infrastructure was improved through a number of newly built facilities. The post office was expanded, kindergartens, nurseries and playgrounds were built, as well as allotments.

After the German reunification , Merzdorf came to the re-established Free State of Saxony . The following regional reforms in Saxony assigned the district to the Riesa-Großenhain district in 1994 and to the Meißen district in 2008.

Merzdorf mansion

The knight's seat, mentioned as early as 1445, initially developed into an outbuilding and later into a manor. The estate was bought by the community of Gröba in 1919 and became part of Riesa in 1925 as a municipal estate.

Merzdorf mansion

The two-storey baroque building of the manor house with 19 windows front, attic and hipped roof got an extension with a balcony on five columns above the entrance portal around 1920. After the Second World War and the land reform in 1945/46, the farm buildings were divided up among the new farmers or added to VEG Riesa-Göhlis, resettlers were allocated apartments in the manor house. In 1952, a municipal kindergarten and later a day nursery was set up. From 1974 to 1998 the manor house served as the district house for the young pioneers. The parking areas served as playgrounds, the castle pond next to it was used as a gondola pond for local recreation. Until the establishment of the "Freizeitinsel Riesa-Großenhain eV" association in June 1998, the house was operated as an open children's and youth leisure facility of the Riesa-Großenhain district office.
