history
Canitz is a Slavic foundation; the village probably existed as early as the 9th century. After the German conquest of the area on the Elbe , a moated castle was built as a mansion in Canitz at the turn of the 10th and 11th centuries. The church was built in the 13th century.
The old moated castle was replaced by a castle in 1550, which burned down in the Thirty Years War . The entire village also suffered a great deal in this war from drafts, looting, devastation and epidemics.
From 1693 to 1697, Andreas Dietrich von Schleinitz , owner of Canitz, had the church rebuilt and expanded. Among other things, a new higher tower was added. Errors in construction repeatedly led to damage, especially cracks on the tower, which had to be repaired at high cost several times. In the Seven Years' War , Prussian soldiers looted the church in 1758; Among other things, they stole the tin organ pipes.
In 1764 a new castle was built in Canitz. In 1819 the first Canitzer school was built. In 1824 Florian Risse became the first official local council chairman.
In 1945 the castle was expropriated and refugees quartered there. In 1948 the authorities ordered the demolition. A sports field was created in place of the castle and the associated garden.
The church had to be closed in 1967 because of the risk of collapse. Since there were no funds for the renovation during the GDR era, the parish decided to demolish it, which then took place in the summer of 1975, leaving the outer walls around four to five meters high.
In 1974 Canitz and the neighboring Pochra were incorporated into Riesa.
In 2005, an association was formed to rebuild the village church .
