history

Lutunewiz was first mentioned in a document in 1186/90 . The place arose on a hill on an arm of the Elbe. The settlement took place much earlier, as can be proven by archaeological finds. On the top of the hill in the south of today's village there was already a settlement with an urn burial site in the Middle Bronze Age . To the northeast, on the road to Riesa, another early Germanic urn field from the 1st millennium BC was found. And remains of a settlement from the 1st millennium found.

In addition to the aristocratic property, part of Leutewitz belonged to the Benedictine monastery in Riesa, which had built a Vorwerk . The church has been under the patronage of the monastery since 1266 . In 1435 the corridors were divided into peasant leanings . In 1650 a lightning strike burned the entire village down to the church. Another major fire on November 19, 1801 destroyed eight houses in addition to the church and the rectory. Until 1839 Leutewitz was subject to the Riesa manor .

When the Elbe was regulated at the end of the century, the Leutewitzer Elbarm was drained and the island of Werder in front of it was landed by filling. The former island, about one and a half kilometers long, was protected against flooding with dams and the Leutewitz corridor was closed. The schoolhouse was inaugurated in 1909. During the Second World War, the Göhlis air base was built west of Leutewitz . It was used by GST as a sports airfield during the GDR era and is now called the Riesa-Göhlis airfield. In 1966 the school was closed and converted into a kindergarten (until 1998). Boritz became the new school location . Leutewitz remained a purely farming village in which potato cultivation played a major role and in the 1970s potato peeling, storage and packaging systems for the tubers were built. About three quarters of the population worked in the Riesa industrial companies.

Leutewitz was incorporated into Riesa on July 1, 1996.

Attractions

  • The church with the cemetery forms the north-eastern end of the place. It can be traced back to 1266 and was built in place of a chapel built in the 12th century by Riesa Abbey. After 1541 it lost its status as a parish church and became a subsidiary church of Heyda, whose pastor, however, resided in the Leutewitz rectory. After the fire of 1801, the new church, now equipped with a tower, was consecrated in 1803. The pulpit altar from 1803 is the work of Johann Gottfried Lämmle from Mühlberg. In 1817 the church received its instrument made by the organ builder Johann Georg Friedlieb Zöllner from Hubertusburg. Between 1997 and 2006 the church was renovated. It has been part of the Martinsgemeinde Hirschstein since 2005.
  • South-east of the village in the direction of Heyda, on the edge of the orchard, there is a memorial stone for the elk that was killed there in 1981 .
  • There are several three- and four-sided courtyards in the village, some of which have half-timbered upper floors. A gatehouse from 1791 and two Kumthallen are a special feature.
