history

Boritz in the 19th century

The place name Boritz means in Sorbian "place at the pine wood" or "village of Boruch".

In Boritz there was a strategically important castle warden who was mentioned in a document from Emperor Otto II on February 27, 983. In 1004, Heinrich II pulled ships together in Boritz and Nisani ( Gau Nisan or, in another opinion, Neußen ad Elbe near Belgern ) as a diversionary maneuver, but then attacked Bohemia via the mountain passes.

The Hohe Straße (old salt road) crossed the Elbe between Boritz and Merschwitz. Here customs were raised on the Elbe. The next customs station up the Elbe was Meissen . There were two Elbe ferries to Merschwitz and to Leckwitz- Rosenmühle, which connected Boritz to the opposite bank of the Elbe. In the sphere of influence of the keeper Boritz was the already mentioned on February 27, 983 and today desert village Setleboresdorf , whose exact location is no longer known. At Boritz in the Elbe there was a ship mill, which was granted a grinding license in 1594 and sank in 1854 during a heavy ice voyage .

A church is mentioned for the first time in 1259. The current church was built in 1754/55 in place of the previous church.

In the vicinity of the village there is a stone cross that was included in the local coat of arms.

Since the municipal reform in 1996, Boritz has been part of the Hirschstein municipality .

The army rallied near Merseburg in mid-August (with the exception of the Bavarians who joined later) and started moving towards Poland. To deceive the enemy, King Heinrich lets ships pull together on the Elbe near Boritz (above Riesa) and near Neußen (near Belgern), but before reaching the river turns surprisingly south to invade Bohemia via the Ore Mountains.
