geography
location
On both sides of the Elbe, in the northwest of the Dresden district, was the Riesa district.
Neighboring areas
The Riesa district bordered clockwise in the north, beginning with the Bad Liebenwerda , Grossenhain , Meißen , Döbeln and Oschatz districts .
Natural space
The district area was in the transition area from the Saxon hill country to the North Saxon heathland. The Elbe valley divided the area into the western landscapes of the Oschatzer Hügelland and the Dahlener Heide as well as the eastern areas of the Großenhainer Pflege and the Annaburger Heide . The Elbe left the Saxon hill country north of Riesa , it now flowed in the southern Elbe , accompanied by protective dikes in a floodplain. The lowest point (91 m) in the circle was at the circle boundary. The Saxon hill country was formed here as a flat undulating landscape at a height of 100 to 150 m. The Oschatzer Maintenance, which is divided by wide valleys ( Döllnitz , Jahna ), as well as the plates of the Großenhainer Maintenance, were covered by loamy sands in the north and sandy loess that merged into loess soil to the south. The highest point of the district was south of Staucha (Hutberg 219 m). The sandy heathland was hilly in the Dahlener Heide. In contrast, the Annaburger Heide was a flat land with coniferous forests (Gohrischheide). Near Gröditz, the Riesa district had a share in the broad valley of the Großer Röder . The Röderaue near Gröditz, the Jahnatal, the Elbe Valley north of Meißen and the Glaubitz Forest were landscape protection areas.

coat of arms
Due to the seal order of the GDR of May 28, 1953, all regional coats of arms lost their meaning as brands or seals. However, the coats of arms of the cities and districts were still used on buildings or in publications without fulfilling an official function. The coat of arms of the Riesa district used in some books actually shows the coat of arms of the city of Riesa. The seal coat of arms of the GDR was official. It was not until the municipal constitution of the GDR on May 17, 1990 that municipalities and districts were able to expressly use coats of arms again and use them as seals.
economy
The industry was essentially limited to the two cities of Riesa ( VEB Rohrkombinat Stahl- und Walzwerk as well as the VEBs Reifenwerk, Aropharm pharmaceuticals factory, cotton spinning mill, Robotron electronics, ignition goods factory, table factory, mills, grain industry, soap factory, pasta factory ) and Gröditz (steel and Rolling mill, pulp mill). In agriculture, wheat and sugar beet were grown on the loess soils in the south, and rye, wheat, potatoes and forage crops on the loamy-sandy soils in the central district.
traffic
The most important railway junction in the Riesa district was the Riesa station , in which the Leipzig – Riesa – Dresden , Riesa – Karl-Marx-Stadt and Riesa – Nossen railway lines were linked. To the east of the Riesa Elbe bridge there were connections from the Leipzig – Dresden line to the Jüterbog – Röderau and Zeithain – Elsterwerda lines . The eastern district area was also opened up with the Berlin – Dresden railway line . During the existence of the Riesa district, all of the aforementioned railway lines were regularly used for both passenger and freight traffic. In 1987 the strategic railway Oschatz – Röderau was put into operation in the district area , but was never used for the intended purpose.
