On January 1, 1994 the current districts of Heidehäuser, Lichtensee, Peritz, Streumen, Tiefenau (since November 1, 1952 after incorporation a district of Lichtensee) and Wülknitz merged to form the current municipality of Wülknitz.

In December 2015, Saxony's first community wind turbine was put into operation in the municipality of Wülknitz. The cooperatively operated 3-megawatt system fed 883,000 kWh into the power grid in the first month of operation. The construction costs of around 5 million euros were raised by a specially founded energy cooperative with the help of a short-term bank loan and subordinated loans that the citizens involved granted by purchasing shares in the wind turbine.
