Bad Liebenwerda district
The Bad Liebenwerda district was a district in the Cottbus district in the GDR .
After the administrative reform , which came into force on July 25, 1952, the Bad Liebenwerda district was formed from the former Liebenwerda district. On May 17, 1990, the district was renamed the Bad Liebenwerda district . On the occasion of the reunification in August 1990, the Bad Liebenwerda district became a district under German municipal law . On December 6, 1993, the Bad Liebenwerda district became part of the district reform in Brandenburg with the Herzberg and Finsterwalde districts in the Elbe-Elster district . The seat of the district administration was in Bad Liebenwerda .

The Bad Liebenwerda district was located in the southwest of the Cottbus district. Geographically, the district belonged to the Breslau-Magdeburg glacial valley .
The mean north-south extension was 16 km and the mean east-west extension 35 km.
The coordinates were between 13 ° 15 'to 13 ° 45' East and 51 ° 30 'North.
Area and population
The area of the district was 599.4 km². For comparison: the area of the Cottbus district was 8,260 km². Its agricultural area comprised about 35,760 ha , its water surface about 950 ha and its forest area about 5900 ha.
In 1957 the district had about 59,400 inhabitants, in 1980 there were about 56,000. The Cottbus district had 825,021 inhabitants that year.
The population density was 99 in 1957 and 93 in 1980 inhabitants per km².

Protected areas
Landscape protection areas
The landscape protection areas primarily served the recreation of the population. Landscape-changing measures required the approval of the responsible local councils. They were developed in cooperation between the nature conservation officer of the district council and the district planning commission for the landscape protection areas in landscape maintenance plans. The landscape protection areas in the Bad Liebenwerda district were the Elbaue Mühlberg, the castle wall Kosilenzien , Lampfert near Kröbeln , Lampfert near Wahrenbrück , the Elsteraue near Bad Liebenwerda and the Merzdorfer-Hirschfelder heights .
Nature reserves
The NSG " Gänsewinkel - Alte Röder " near Prieschka , " Der Loben " near Hohenleipisch and the "Suden" near Gorden were designated as nature reserves in the Bad Liebenwerda district .

On July 25, 1952, the Bad Liebenwerda district was formed from the former Liebenwerda district, with the towns of Drasdo , Falkenberg / Elster , Kölsa , Munich / Elster , Langennaundorf , Schmerkendorf as well as Uebigau and Wiederau being incorporated into the Herzberg district.
In addition, the municipalities of Frauwalde , Grünewalde , Großkmehlen , Kleinkmehlen , Koyne (zu Kleinleipisch), the town of Ortrand and the municipalities of Bockwitz , Dolsthaida , Kleinleipisch , Mückenberg and Naundorf of the then large municipality of Lauchhammer were incorporated into the eastern district of Senftenberg .

Economy and Infrastructure
The Bad Liebenwerda district was an industrial-agricultural district. There was industry worth mentioning in the Elsterwerda and Bad Liebenwerda areas . Around 31% of the working population worked in industry and 22% in agriculture .
Industry and Commerce
Important metal processing companies were VEB Anlagenbau Impulsa , VEB screw factory in Elsterwerda and VEB Robotron (formerly Reiss company) in Bad Liebenwerda. Light industry companies were VEB Möbelindustrie Mühlberg and VEB Steingutwerk Elsterwerda. Building materials were produced in the VEB aggregates and special sands Haida, in the VEB Elbekies Mühlberg and the building fittings factory Elsterwerda.
Agriculture
Major companies in the agriculture and food industry were the VEB Brottewitz sugar factory (the only sugar factory in the district of Cottbus), the VdgB dairy cooperative in Elsterwerda, the LPG animal production Muhlberg, the LPG plant production Muhlberg, the VEB milk production plant Hirschfeld, the LPG "Thomas Muenzer" in Oschätzchen , the LPG plant production Kahla and the LPG plant production Prestewitz. There were three briquette factories in the Bad Liebenwerda district . These were located in Domsdorf, Wildgrube and Plessa and belonged to the lignite combine (BKK) Lauchhammer .

Motor vehicles (with the exception of motorcycles) and trailers were assigned three-letter distinguishing signs from around 1974 to the end of 1990, beginning with the pair of letters ZA . The last number plate series used for motorcycles was ZX 00-01 to ZX 50-00 .
At the beginning of 1991 the district received the distinguishing mark LIB . It was issued until the end of 1993. It has been available in the Elbe-Elster district since May 29, 2013 ( license plate liberalization ).
