About this picture

The district of Hoyerswerda , in Sorbian Wokrjes Wojerecy , was a district in the Cottbus district of the GDR . From 1990 to 1995 it existed as the district of Hoyerswerda in the Free State of Saxony . Today, its area is largely in the Bautzen district in Saxony. The seat of the district administration was in Hoyerswerda .

geography

location

The district of Hoyerswerda in Upper Lusatia was about halfway between Cottbus and Dresden and was traversed by the Spree and the Black Elster .

Neighboring areas

The district of Hoyerswerda bordered clockwise in the north, beginning with the districts of Spremberg , Weißwasser , Niesky , Bautzen , Kamenz and Senftenberg .

history

A district of Hoyerswerda had existed in the Prussian province of Silesia since 1825 . After the end of the Second World War , this district fell into the Soviet occupation zone and was incorporated into the state of Saxony. On July 25, 1952, there was a comprehensive district reform in the GDR , in which, among other things, the states were dissolved and replaced by districts . The western part of the district of Hoyerswerda became part of the new district of Senftenberg . From the remaining part of the district, the district of Hoyerswerda was formed, which was assigned to the newly formed district of Cottbus . The district seat was in the city of Hoyerswerda . The district was part of the Sorbian settlement area.

In particular, the expansion of the lignite industry resulted in an unusually strong population growth compared to other districts of the GDR since the mid-1950s. In 1965, the community was Lauta the city charter , Bernsdorf was awarded it three years later.

On May 17, 1990 the district was renamed the Hoyerswerda district. In the course of reunification , the district of Hoyerswerda, like the district of Weißwasser , was not incorporated into the state of Brandenburg like most of the district of Cottbus , but into the Free State of Saxony through a referendum in 1990 . In the course of the first Saxon district reform , the district of Hoyerswerda was merged on January 1, 1996 with the district of Kamenz , which had always been Saxon , whereby the city of Hoyerswerda became an independent city and the community of Uhyst changed to the Lower Silesian Upper Lusatia district . As a result of the second Saxon district reform , the district of Kamenz and the city of Hoyerswerda became part of the district of Bautzen on August 1, 2008 .

coat of arms

original circle coat of arms
simplified circular coat of arms

In 1990 the district took over the coat of arms of the former district of Hoyerswerda . This was simplified and adapted to the heraldic rules and approved in 1995, shortly before the district was dissolved.

Blazon :

  • Original coat of arms: above silver waves in which a blue fish swims, a golden wall with three pinnacles, above which a silver oak tree with golden acorns grows in the blue field.
  • Simplified coat of arms: In a blue field on a blue wave bottom, in which a silver fish, a continuous golden wall with three battlements, from which a silver oak grows.

Meaning:

The coat of arms with the golden, three-tinned wall on a blue background is based on the coat of arms of the city of Bautzen and thus establishes a connection between the district and Upper Lusatia . The oak is a reference to the first known seal of the city of Hoyerswerda , while the fish is representative of the two large rivers in the district, the Spree and the Schwarze Elster .

economy

The district of Hoyerswerda was strongly influenced by lignite mining. Significant companies were among others:

traffic

The Berliner Ring – Dresden motorway passed the district to the west. The F 96 from Berlin via Hoyerswerda to Bautzen and the F 97 from Dresden via Hoyerswerda to Cottbus also served national road traffic .

The district area was integrated into the railway network of the GDR by the railway lines Hoyerswerda – Bautzen , Hoyerswerda – Spremberg – Cottbus and Falkenberg – Hoyerswerda – Horka .

Population overview of all 44 municipalities in the district that came to the re-established state of Saxony in 1990.

As a result of incorporations and mergers, the number of municipalities fell to 17 after 1990 until the district was dissolved in 1996, including four cities and the two newly formed municipalities Elsterheide ( Halštrowska hola ) and Knappensee ( Hórnikečanski Jězor ).

Numerous places such as Scado ( Škodow in Lower Sorbian ) were excavated through the opencast mines in the district .

License Plate

Motor vehicles (with the exception of motorcycles) and trailers were assigned three-letter distinctive signs from around 1974 to the end of 1990, beginning with the letter pairs ZJ , ZK and ZT . The last number plate series used for motorcycles was ZZ 00-01 to ZZ 99-99 .

At the beginning of 1991 the district received the distinguishing mark HY . It was issued through March 31, 1996. It has been available in the Bautzen district since November 9, 2012 due to the license plate liberalization .
