history

On July 25, 1952, there was a comprehensive district reform in the GDR , in which the states were dissolved and replaced by districts . The new Jessen district was formed from parts of the former districts of Herzberg , Torgau and Wittenberg , and was assigned to the newly formed district of Cottbus . The district seat was in the city of Jessen .

To the district of Jessen belonged 5 cities and 50 communities:

On May 17, 1990, the district was renamed the Jessen district. After reunification in 1990 , the Jessen district came to the state of Saxony-Anhalt. In the course of the first district reform in Saxony-Anhalt , the district of Jessen was dissolved on July 1, 1994 and incorporated into the district of Wittenberg .

Holzdorf Airfield

The airport Holzdorf the NVA was put into service the 1,982th It is practically completely in the Herzberg district , only the Holzdorf -Ost housing estate is in the Jessen district. After reunification , the airfield and the district of Holzdorf-Ost were in the state of Brandenburg , while Holzdorf was in the state of Saxony-Anhalt . The majority of the residents of Holzdorf-Ost refused to take part in the elections that had anything to do with the state of Brandenburg. A state treaty between the two countries then led to an exchange of territory: Holzdorf-Ost became part of Saxony-Anhalt.
