Zemnick is a district of the town of Zahna-Elster in the district of Wittenberg in Saxony-Anhalt .

geography

Zemnick is a round village open to the southeast and is located approx. 19 km northeast of Lutherstadt Wittenberg . The village of Zemnick includes the Wolfswinkel residential area on the Herren-Holz forest , both of which are north of Zemnick. To the west of Zemnick and Wolfswinkel are the Zemnicker meadows, whose numerous moats drain into the Elbe via a main ditch and the Zugbach to the southwest. Raßdorf follows further west .

history

7th century

The name Zemnick is of Old Sorbian origin. The area was settled from around the 7th century by a part of the Slavs who came from the east and were later referred to as Wenden in German . Another important group of the population were the Flemings .

Typical for the Slavic populated areas was the layout of the villages in a horseshoe shape, as can also be found in Zemnick. Zemnick has been a subsidiary of Gadegast since it was founded .

15th - 19th century

Zemnick belongs to the Seyda office of the Kurkreis in the Electorate of Saxony . The Seyda office became part of the Kurkreis in 1501 when it was bought by Friedrich the Wise . At the beginning of the 19th century, the office and the Kurkreis became part of the Kingdom of Saxony .

20th century

As part of the National Socialist Germanization of Sorbian place names, the district administrator of the Schweinitz district had applied in 1937 to rename Zemnick to “Birkenheim” and thus erase the Sorbian name. The community itself agreed to the proposal with reservations, but preferred Zemmendorf as the new name. Unlike in other regions , however, the renaming ultimately failed due to the rejection of the responsible district president.

Zemnick post mill

The Zemnick post mill was a little out of the way in the southeast of the village and is recorded both on the map of the Saxon spa district from 1752 and on the Seyda measurement table from 1874. It was demolished after a long period of decline. Today there is a farm in its place.

Post-turnaround time

After German reunification , Zemnick initially remained a municipality in the district of Jessen , which became part of the district of Wittenberg on July 1, 1994 . Subsequently, Zemnick joined the administrative community (VG) Elster-Seyda-Klöden , which was finally dissolved by the city of Jessen (Elster) in 2004 after the incorporation of a large part of its members and became the newly founded VG Elbaue-Fläming on January 1, 2005 passed over.

Six years later, on January 1, 2011, the town of Zahna and the communities of Dietrichsdorf, Elster (Elbe), Gadegast, Leetza, Listerfehrda, Mühlanger, Zemnick and Zörnigall formed the unified community and town of Zahna-Elster . The VG Elbaue-Fläming was dissolved and the political independence as a municipality was lost. Today the village is represented by a council and mayor in Zahna-Elster.
