Zahna is one of nine localities in the town of Zahna-Elster in the Wittenberg district in Saxony-Anhalt . Zahna had city rights until the unified community was formed.
Surname
In the course of the last millennium, the toponym of today's place has changed several times. Thus, in publications from 1161 and 1190 Zcane , 1187, 1326 and 1528/33 Zane , 1292 Zanis , 1379, 1389, 1436/37 and 1528/33 Czane , 1411 before Zahna and in the font from 1528/33 additionally by to find the Zcan and the Zane as modifications. The name Zahna , which is used today, can be found in writings from 1411 and then later, in 1753 and 1791. In the Leipzig council books, which deal with the period between 1466 and 1500, Zcane , Czane and Zahna are used, with Zahna already being used as the main term.
According to this knowledge, the current name has been known since the early 15th century and has mainly been in use since the 18th century at the latest .

Zahna is located in Fläming not far from Bundesstraße 2 on the Berlin – Halle railway line . The place is traversed by the Zahnabach.
Administrative division
The districts of Zahna, Bülzig , Klebitz , Rahnsdorf and Woltersdorf belong to the community of Zahna . Rahnsdorf has been part of Zahna since July 1, 2003 and Bülzig since July 1, 2008.
Zahna-Elster was formed on January 1, 2011 as part of a regional reform from the city of Zahna and eight other communities in the south. These formerly independent communities of the dissolved Elbaue-Fläming administrative community form nine localities according to Section 16 of the main statutes of Zahna-Elster. Each, including Zahna, has its own local council and a local mayor. The administration is located in the town hall of Zahna.
history
Zahna is one of the oldest places in Saxony-Anhalt . It is historically documented that from approx. 2000 BC. Chr. Until today continuous settlement. Archaeological finds show that the Germanic tribe of the Semnones from the 6th century BC. Until the beginning of the Great Migration in the region.
After 600 the Sorbs took over the residences of the Semnones. The shape and structure of the historic town center goes back to the high medieval settlement of the Fläming by Dutch colonists ( Flemings ) in the 12th century.
The entire ridge north of Wittenberg was so strongly characterized by the peculiarities of the Flemings that the origin and tribal designation of the new settlers referred to the whole area that is still called Fläming today.
In 1189 Zahna was named as the main town of Burgward . The castle was the seat and center of the small Zahna lordship. In 1436 the Electoral Saxon office of Zahna was formed, which was merged with the office of Wittenberg between 1486 and 1490 . During this time, Zahna lost its function as official residence.
In 1841, with the opening of the Anhalter Bahn Berlin - Wittenberg - Köthen railway connection.

The honorary local mayor is Johannes Schneider (CDU). He was elected on June 1, 2015 by the members of the local council.

The coat of arms was approved on August 16, 1995 by the Dessau regional council and registered in the Magdeburg State Archives under the coat of arms roll number 65/1995.
Blazon : “In green over blue water a five-towered silver castle with open arches; the towers in different sizes with black windows and red pointed roofs decorated with silver buttons; the middle tower - raised and stronger than the others - with a red ledge; seven silver fish turned obliquely to the left in the water. "
The colors show silver (white) - green.
The coat of arms of Zahna is documented for the first time on a city seal from 1417. It represents the three water gates and the old city wall with its turrets. The water indicates the Zahnabach river. The seven fish here indicate the former seven ponds, although today only the council pond and the pine pond have been preserved.
Culture and sights
Zahna has several cultural monuments .
- Hospital of the Holy Spirit (Zahna) : founded in 1336 by Duke Rudolf I of Saxony-Wittenberg ; Burned down in 1547, then rebuilt together with a chapel and the buildings necessary to run the farm with the help of Duke Moritz von Sachsen ; Burned down again in 1637 and only rebuilt in 1754. The present collegiate chapel was built in 1878 and the institution building was expanded in 1906/07.
- Sankt-Marien-Kirche : The Romanesque cruciform church with its massive tower was built in the late 12th century in careful ashlar masonry, which is comparable to that of the Zinna monastery church . Later additions were made in brick. The building is typical of early town churches in the region and, with its former basilica floor plan, refers to the importance of the place that was planned at the time of its foundation.
- Town hall , completed in 1897 after eleven months of construction
- Farm museum in the house of a Fläming farmer from 1730 including barn and stable building. You can visit a tractor exhibition, a forge, a collection of agricultural implements, an exhibition of grain technology , the apartment of the Fläming farmer from the 1920s and a parlor with objects and documents. It is the largest agricultural museum in the region with an area of 1800 m 2 .
- Collective grave in the local cemetery for eleven Germans and a Dutchman known by name , who was abducted to Germany during the Second World War and a victim of forced labor . They died in an air raid.

- The L 123 state road between Kropstädt and Seyda and the L 126 state road between Lutherstadt Wittenberg and Klebitz cross the town. It is about 7 km to Bundesstrasse 2 in Kropstädt, which connects Berlin and Lutherstadt Wittenberg .
- The station Zahna is located on the railway line Berlin-Hall (pickup path) and from the regional express RE 3 (Schwedt-Wittenberg) of the DB Regio every two hours as well as the regional train RB 80 (Jiiterbog-Wittenberg Hall) with up to 4 pairs of trains in approached during rush hour.
fire Department
The Zahna volunteer fire brigade was founded by the then mayor Hermann Hunschke in December 1880 and provides fire protection and general assistance. She is currently a base fire department. It has an operations department, a marching band , the youth fire department , the children's fire department and an age department.
