The listed Protestant St. Mary's Church is located in the Zahna district of the city of Zahna-Elster in the Wittenberg district in Saxony-Anhalt . The transept, the choir square and the foundation of the tower have been preserved from the original building, which was probably built around the year 1200 . During the Thirty Years War , the church was partially destroyed, after which a simplified reconstruction took place.

Building description

building

The three-nave pillar basilica was originally built from granite blocks. The masonry of the transept as well as that of the eastern parts were probably derived from the monastery church in Kloster Zinna . In the south wall of the choir there is a walled-up priest door . Two round windows and a gable cross are in the east gable of the choir. The tower of the church, designed as a west bar, consists mainly of bricks and is continued from the height of the upper aisle in the width of the central nave. The formerly plastered southern row of pillars in the central nave consists of irregular field stones up to the height of the windows, the northern row of pillars is made of brick masonry. A total of three construction phases are assumed until the Thirty Years' War . This is evidenced by, among other things, lancet windows and a construction seam above the eaves height of the central nave. The aisles destroyed during the Thirty Years War were dismantled during the rebuilding of the building until 1669. The arcades and the passages from the aisles to the transept were walled up. There was probably a sacristy annex on the north side of the choir , which was removed during the reconstruction. The upper floor of the tower with a hipped roof dates from 1719.

Interior and equipment

Organ of the Zahna Church

The approach of a longitudinal barrel has been preserved in the tower hall . The installation of a three-sided wooden gallery makes the interior of the nave appear cramped, but the choir and apse give the interior a clear spatial impression. The baptismal font, executed in the Baroque style , is hexagonal and decorated with angel heads. A star decoration is attached to the base. The organ of the church with 25 stops on two manuals and a pedal dates from 1843 and was built by the local organ builder Moritz Baumgarten. In the choir there are several inscription tombstones and a tomb from 1774. This was erected for Christoph Uschmann on a rock plinth and an attachment with allegorical ornaments.
