geography
Neighboring areas
The district of Guben bordered counterclockwise in the north, beginning with the districts of Fürstenberg (until 1961) and Eisenhüttenstadt-Land (from 1961), Beeskow , Cottbus-Land and Forst . In the east it bordered on Poland .
history
In the spring of 1945 the area of the district of Guben was occupied by the Red Army . The district of Guben was divided by the Oder-Neisse border . What remained was the area west of the Oder and Neisse rivers with 50 rural communities and one urban community ( Fürstenberg ) and 35,192 inhabitants.
Five years later, on July 1, 1950, the district of Guben was dissolved. The northern district area (33 communities) was then incorporated into the Frankfurt (Oder) district , the southern district area (15 communities and the independent city of Guben) into the Cottbus district. The district now known as Guben was re-established in connection with the administrative reform of the GDR on July 25, 1952. The new district comprised the villages that belonged to the district until 1950 and were located to the west and south of the city, three villages from the old Lübben district ( Staakow , Pinnow , Reicherskreuz ) and four from the old Cottbus district ( Tauer , Schönhöhe , Drewitz , Jänschwalde ). The places Groß-Breesen, Reichenbach and Kaltenborn were incorporated into Guben. This newly formed district comprised 381 square kilometers, 25 rural communities and the city of Guben with 44,600 inhabitants (1983).
On May 17, 1990, the name of the district was changed to the district of Guben. On December 6, 1993, in the course of the district reform in Brandenburg, the newly formed Spree-Neisse district was created from the former districts of Cottbus , Guben, Forst and Spremberg. This district reform was implemented against the will of the city of Eisenhüttenstadt and the district councils of Eisenhüttenstadt and Guben, which wanted to restore the old Guben district (until 1950) in a new Oder-Neisse district .
