Kerkwitz , Keŕkojce in Lower Sorbian , is a village in the municipality of Schenkendöbern in the Spree-Neisse district in Brandenburg . The village has 502 inhabitants and is one of the few Brandenburg municipalities that has seen an increase in the number of inhabitants due to immigration.

The place name is derived either from the Old Sorbian personal name Kyrk ("the throat") or from the word kerk for "shrub", although the latter interpretation is questioned.

Lignite mining

At the end of 2007, plans by the Vattenfall Group were announced that provided for the opening of the Jänschwalde-Nord opencast mine. Their approval would have resulted in the resettlement of the inhabitants and the destruction of the place and the landscape. In addition to Kerkwitz, the villages of Atterwasch and Grabko would be affected . Every year in January, the residents of the three towns and neighboring communities protested against the Group's plans with a star march. However, on March 30, 2017, the new owner LEAG announced that it would not expand Jänschwalde.
