The place Bärenklau was first mentioned on December 1st, 1295. At that time the place name was "Bernbruch", this is a transfer of the name from the village of Bernbruch in the Leipzig district , this place name describes a "settlement in the Bruch that belongs to a man named Bero". In 1602 the name was changed to hogweed, after the plant . The street village belonged to the Guben Benedictine monastery until 1563 . As a result, the Bärenklau estate changed hands several times. After the Congress of Vienna , Lower Lusatia and thus Bärenklau came to the Kingdom of Prussia . There the place was in the district of Bärenklau in the district of Guben .
Between 1928 and 1930, the then landowner, Guben cloth manufacturer Ernst C. Lehmann , had Bärenklau Castle built as a new mansion by the Berlin architects Breslauer und Salinger - it is considered the youngest castle in Brandenburg. In 1946 the estate was expropriated and divided between 38 farmers and small owners. The castle then served as a convalescent home , union school and, between 1956 and 1990, as a convalescent home for cancer patients . After 1990 it was privatized and renovated. It is for sale (2019).
On July 25, 1952 Bärenklau was assigned to the newly formed Guben district in the Cottbus district and, after the reunification, was in the Guben district in Brandenburg . From October 1, 1992 Bärenklau was part of the Schenkendöbern office . After the district reform in Brandenburg on December 6, 1993 , Bärenklau came to the newly formed Spree-Neisse district . On October 26, 2003 Bärenklau was merged with the previously independent communities Atterwasch , Gastrose-Kerkwitz , Grabko , Lutzketal and Pinnow-Heideland to form the new community Schenkendöbern .
