history
Drewitz was first mentioned in a document in 1412. The place name, which comes from Lower Sorbian , can be interpreted as "settlement in the forest". The Sorbian place name is derived from the Lower Sorbian word drjewo 'wood' and describes a wood storage area. The place was sometimes referred to as Wüst-Drewitz to distinguish it from the nearby Groß Drewitz .
Drewitz had a village school since 1733 at the latest. The place was part of the Cottbus rule and was mentioned in 1809 as a village with a forge . The state rule was dissolved in 1815 and Drewitz as a municipality part of the Cottbus district in the Prussian province of Brandenburg . In 1827 the village church of Drewitz was rebuilt after it had been destroyed several times by fires. From 1952 the community was in the Guben district in the GDR district of Cottbus . After reunification , the Guben district came to the state of Brandenburg, and Drewitz has been in the Spree-Neisse district since 1993 .
On October 26, 2003, Drewitz was incorporated into Jänschwalde as part of a municipal reform.
