Friedrich Wilhelm August Bratring (born December 8, 1772 in Losse near Seehausen in the Altmark , † December 12, 1829 in Berlin ), was a German ethnologist and author of statistical and topographical books.

Life

After attending school in Salzwedel, Bratring, the son of a Protestant pastor, began studying theology at the University of Halle , which he soon broke off to turn to geography and ethnology . After completing his studies, he went to Berlin around 1793/94, where he probably initially worked as an editor for various publishing houses. He then found a job as an assistant at the royal library, in 1803 became secretary in the forestry department of the former general directorate in Berlin and in 1813 received his last job as a book auction commissioner, in which he worked successfully. He collected manuscripts, documents and books and wrote some valuable reference works in the field of geography and ethnology.
