Location of Grabko in Brandenburg

Grabko ( Lower Sorbian Grabk ) is a small village in Lower Lusatia and belongs to the Brandenburg municipality of Schenkendöbern in the Spree-Neisse district . The 145 inhabitants live on an area of 12 square kilometers. Grabko was first mentioned in a document in 1456.

The place name is derived from the Sorbian word grab for "hornbeam" or from an Old Sorbian personal name Grabš (analogous to the family name Grabiš / Grabisch ).

On October 26, 2003, Grabko merged with Atterwasch , Bärenklau , Gastrose-Kerkwitz , Lutzketal and Pinnow-Heideland to form the new municipality of Schenkendöbern .

Star march against the demolition of the villages of Atterwasch, Kerkwitz and Grabko in 2014

In autumn 2007, plans by Vattenfall Europe Mining to relocate and then demolish the village for the Jänschwalde open-cast mine from 2031 onwards became known. The inhabitants of the three villages protested against the plans of the group every January with a star march. The planned devastation of the three locations was discussed by the documentary filmmaker Peter Benedix in the films Heimat auf Zeit (2009) and BrückenJahre (2014). However, on March 30, 2017, the new owner LEAG announced that it would not expand Jänschwalde.
