The Diaľnica D3 , sometimes also referred to as the " Kysuce Motorway" (Slovak Kysucká diaľnica ), until 1999 D18 , is a motorway in northern Slovakia . When completed, the 60 km long motorway will connect the D1 motorway near Dolný Hričov and the town of Žilina with the Skalité - Zwardoń motorway border crossing on the Polish border. The motorway is part of the European route E 75 , to a lesser extent also the E 442 and part of the VI. Pan-European Transport Corridor ( Gdansk - Łódź - Žilina - Bratislava - Budapest - Belgrade - Athens ).

Three sections of the route have currently been approved: Dolný Hričov –Žilina, Brodno (12.7 km, full expansion), Oščadnica - Čadca , Bukov (4 km, semi-expansion ) and Svrčinovec – Polish border at Skalité (15.5 km, semi-expansion ). Another 5.7 km are under construction.

Construction began in April 1996 with the 4 km long section Ošcadnica – Čadca, Bukov, which was planned as the relocation of 1st order road 11 (administrative I / 11A), although it was built on the Žilina carriageway of the future motorway. The second section, the 3.2 km long section Skalité – Polish border, went into construction in November 1997, when the entire motorway was still known as the D18. In 1999 the route of the motorway was redesigned as the D3, among other things the previously planned connection to the D1 south of Žilina was abandoned in favor of the current route. Due to a lack of financial resources, construction slowed, so that the first section at Čadca was only opened to traffic on October 29, 2004 together with the Horelica tunnel . The section Skalité-Polish border with the planned completion in November 2000, however, could not be released for years because there was no connection to the existing road network at the Slovak end of the section and was therefore useless. As a result, by 2017, Skalité had four bridges that were only “there” .

With the construction of the Kia Motors Slovakia automobile plant near Žilina between 2004 and 2005, the connection to Bratislava enjoyed the highest priority and therefore, in October 2005, construction of the 8.5 km long Dolný Hričov – Žilina, Strážov line began, which by Slovakian standards was fast passed. Part of it was partially completed in January 2007 and in June 2008 the entire route was officially opened to traffic in four lanes. The heart of this section is the slope bridge over the existing road and Hričov reservoir with a length of 1,536 m. The construction costs were almost exactly 175 million euros, which at that time corresponded to about 6 billion Slovak crowns .

After that, the further construction of the motorway came to a standstill until October 2013, when construction of the 12.2 km long Svrčinovec – Skalité section began, with the two-lane expansion of the above-mentioned Skalité – Polish border section on June 10, 2017 has been. Part of this route are two tunnels - Svrčinovec (420 m) and Poľana (898 m) - as well as several large bridges. One of them, the 630 m long Valy viaduct near the three-country point Slovakia-Czech Republic-Poland, reaches a maximum height of 84 m above the valley floor, making it the highest bridge in Slovakia. The total cost of both sections was around. The last section so far was the section Žilina, Strážov – Žilina, Brodno (4.25 km) opened to traffic on December 2, 2017 after a construction period of three and a half years. This section essentially consists of a large bridge over the Hričov reservoir (length approx. 1.5 km), the Považský Chlmec tunnel (2,218 m) and the Brodno bridge over the Kysuca (length 500 m). The construction costs amounted to 255 million euros.

Construction projects and planning

The operator NDS as plans to complete the construction of the motorway in 2023 (as of June 2016).

In December 2016, construction of the 5.67 km long section Čadca, Bukov - Svrčinovec officially began in full expansion. The completion date is December 2020.
