  • Under construction
  • In planning
  • The Rýchlostná cesta R2 is an expressway in the west and south of Slovakia that is largely still being planned . It will replace 1st order roads 9 and 16 on its route . Larger cities on the planned route are Trenčín , Prievidza , Zvolen , Rimavská Sobota and Košice .

In the final stage, its length should be around 313 km, excluding the joint route with the R1. It is part of the European roads E 572 (Trenčín – Žiar nad Hronom) and E 58 and E 571 (both Zvolen – Košice). In the Zvolen– Košické Oľšany section , it forms the southern counterpart to the main D1 highway in the north.

    Existing routes

In December 2019, 52.7 km of the actual expressway had been built. In the south are in operation: a 4.77 km long bypass of Ožďany (traffic opening December 5, 2006), a total of 13.4 km long bypass of Figa and Tornaľa (traffic opening Figa – Tornaľa December 5, 2006, Figa bypass August 28 2008). The two routes used to be administratively referred to as I / 50A and I / 50B. The 5.76 km long Lovčica - Lovča section ( Žiar nad Hronom bypass ) has also been open to traffic since December 15, 2014 . With the exception of a small piece at Lovča, all of the above sections are only available in two-lane expansion, albeit with creeping tracks on larger gradients.

The R2 north of Vígľaš , view towards Košice

The Pstruša – Kriváň section ( Detva bypass , 10.38 km) was opened on November 10, 2015 after almost two years of construction as the first fully four-lane section of the R2. The total cost was 178 million euros, 85 percent financed by EU regional funds. On May 16, 2017, this was given a 7.85 km western extension to the Zvolen-východ junction near Zvolenská Slatina , which had been under construction since July 2014 and should be ready by November 2016 (originally July 2016). Completion was delayed by six months because of ammunition finds. The 18.2 km long continuous route is signposted as a motorway throughout.

Between Trenčín and Prievidza, only the 9.56 km long between Ruskovce and Pravotice (Bánovce nad Bebravou bypass) exists in two lanes, which was opened to traffic on October 6, 2016. The building cost around 88 million euros.

In the east, only the 1 km long stretch from Košice-východ (near Hrašovík) to the Košické Oľšany motorway junction has been in operation since December 16, 2019 and serves as a feeder to the D1 motorway, which was opened in the Budimír – Bidovce section on the same day.

The bypasses of Bánovce nad Bebravou, Ožďany, Figa and Tornaľa are currently exempt from the Slovak vignette requirement.

A further 25 km run as a joint route with the R1 between Žiar nad Hronom and Zvolen and almost 9 km between Nováky and Prievidza (the latter route is not yet part of the R2, but the 1st order road 9).

    Lines under construction

Construction of the R2 between Mýtna and Tomášovce (13.5 km) began at the end of July 2019, and the line is to be completed by 2021.

A connection of the existing Zvolen-východ – Kriváň line to the R1 is not foreseeable in the near future due to the proximity to the sources of the Sliač spa and thus the need for a new environmental assessment.

    Engineering structures

A total of six tunnels are currently planned on the R2. From west to east these are: Chotômka (595 m), Prielohy (2,880 m), Šajba (650 m), Ležiak (520 m), Plešivec (1,450 m) and Soroška (4,650 m).

    Special case Košice

A special case is part of the inner bypass of Košice. Although not part of the actual R2, which is planned along and outside the city limits, an approximately 11.5 km long part of the former 1st order road 50 from the Košice-Šaca junction to the Košice-VSS junction is administratively dedicated as R2, however not signposted. The so-called road has the status of a motor road and, like motorways and expressways, is maintained by the motorway company Národná diaľničná spoločnosť, as. Although it is completely four-lane and almost completely directional, it does not meet the requirements of an expressway in parts: there are several level crossings, bus stops and pedestrian crossings.

The course of this section is shown in the table below on the right, although it is not included in the length.
