The place is in the valley of the river Slaná in the small basin called Rožňavská kotlina (German Rosenauer Kessel), surrounded by the karst landscape of the Slovak Karst . The town center is four kilometers from Rožňava and 73 kilometers from Košice .
history
Brzotín was first mentioned in writing in 1242 as Berzethe . In the Middle Ages the village was the site of a gold mine, so German colonists are also present. In the 14th century there was a toll station here on the way to Spiš County . During this time the castle above the village was mentioned for the first time (1311 as castrum Berzete ). The Mariássy and Bebek families were important landowners in the Middle Ages, and the Andrássy family had been in charge since the 16th century. In 1573 the castle was demolished by the Turks who owned the village a few years earlier. In the 19th century there were five blast furnaces and hammer mills in the village, but they were shut down again during the 20th century. In 1828 there were 161 houses and 1211 residents here.
Until 1919 the place in Gemer and Kleinhont County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia. As a result of the First Vienna Arbitration Award , it was again part of Hungary from 1938-45. In the years 1976-90 Brzotín was a district of the neighboring town of Rožňava.

The population is mixed according to the 2001 census, where of the 1238 inhabitants recorded at the time, 43.2% were Slovaks, 40% Hungarians and 15.4% Roma.
