Gemerská Hôrka (1927-1965 Slovak "Gemerská Horka" - to 1927 "Horka", Hungarian Özörény or Gömörhorka - until 1907 Horka ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with a population of 1,305 (December 31, 2019), which for Okres Rožňava , belongs to a district of Košický kraj and is part of the traditional Gemer landscape .

geography

The village is located at the transition from the Rimavská kotlina basin (part of the larger Juhoslovenská kotlina ) to the Slovak Karst . The village lies on a hallway terrace of the Slaná between two railway lines. The center of the village lies at an altitude of 229  m nm and is 20 kilometers from Rožňava .

history

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1413 as Horka and is, so to speak , the continuation of the older medieval villages Malach (first mentioned in 1243) and Ozoran (Hungarian Özörény , first mentioned in 1243). The place Malach was created at the same time as the Gemer County ; the original inhabitants were guardians of the royal property of the castle Gemer . The name Horka was initially only a name for part of Malach, but later spread to the entire village. The village of Malach went under during the Turkish Wars in the 16th century, and Horka itself was temporarily uninhabited due to anti-Habsburg uprisings in the 17th and early 18th centuries, and the inhabitants only returned after the war-like conditions had ended.

In 1828 there were 103 houses and 702 inhabitants. The main sources of income were agriculture, lime kilns, charcoal burners and the inhabitants were also shepherds. A paper and cellulose factory was established in 1883 and existed until 1992.

Until 1918/1919, the place in Gemer and Kleinhont counties belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. 1938–1945 he was in Hungary again due to the First Vienna Arbitration .
