Nižná Slaná (German Lower Salt , Hungarian Alsósajó ) is a municipality in eastern Slovakia . It is located in the southeastern part of the Slovak Ore Mountains , at the confluence of the Kobeliarovský potok in the Slaná river (German salt). The town of Dobšiná is 12 km to the north and the town of Rožňava 14 km to the southeast. The main road 67 , which connects the Hungarian and Polish borders, runs through the village .

The place was first mentioned as Sayow in 1363 .

In the 19th century mercury and ore mining ( siderite ) and processing developed. In 2008 ore mining was stopped.

In addition to the main town, the municipality also includes the district Nižnoslanská Baňa .
