Silica , Hungarian Szilice (up to 1927 "Silice") is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with 552 inhabitants (December 31, 2019), which for Okres Rožňava of, a circle kraj Košický heard.
geography
The municipality is located within the Silická planina plateau in the Slovak Karst , the largest plateau in Slovakia, near the border with Hungary . Apart from the small lake Jasteričie jazero and a pond, there is hardly any surface water here due to the calcareous soil. Of the caves scattered around the area, the Silická ľadnica ice cave (entrance 503 m nm ) has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1995 . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 546 m nm and is 21 kilometers from Rožňava .
Neighboring municipalities are Jovice and Krásnohorská Dlhá Lúka in the north, Silická Jablonica in the east, Aggtelek (H) in the south, Silická Brezová in the south-west, Slavec in the west and Brzotín in the north-west.
history
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1376 as Szedlych , other old names are Zedlyche (1386), Zethlyche (1399), Zylicza (1430) and Silicza (1773). In 1399 the village belonged to the estate of a certain István Szalonnai , later to the Bebek family and other members of the lower nobility. In 1828 there were 107 houses and 777 inhabitants who lived from agriculture, fruit growing and livestock. Bell casting was a long-standing craft .
Until 1918/19, the town in Gemer and Kleinhont counties (until 1880 in Torna counties ) belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then became part of Czechoslovakia and now Slovakia. From 1938 to 1945 he was once again part of Hungary on the basis of the First Vienna Arbitration .

According to the 2011 census, Silica had 562 inhabitants, including 438 Magyars, 67 Slovaks, six Roma, two Ukrainians and one Jew. 48 residents gave no answer. 279 residents committed themselves to the Reformed Church, 138 residents to the Roman Catholic Church, 32 residents to the Greek Catholic Church, five residents each to the Jehovah's Witnesses and to the Apostolic Church, four residents to the Evangelical Church AB, three residents to the Old Catholic Church and each one resident to the Methodist Church and the Congregational Church; three residents professed a different denomination. 36 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 55 residents was not determined.
