Kečovo , Hungarian Kecso is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with 344 inhabitants (December 31, 2019), which for Okres Rožňava of, a circle kraj Košický heard.

geography

The municipality is located in the Slovak Karst near the border with Hungary and lies on the edge of the Silická planina plateau . A small stream flows through it. The municipality is characterized by various karst formations such as karst springs, gullies and caves and is largely part of the Slovak Karst National Park . Among other things, you will find the entrance to the Domica cave here. The center of the village is at an altitude of 354  m nm and is 32 kilometers from Rožňava .

Neighboring communities are Silická Brezová in the north, Aggtelek (H) in the east and southeast, Tornaľa in the south and Dlhá Ves in the west.

history

Kečovo was first mentioned in writing in 1272 as Kucheu , other historical names are Kechew (1344) and Kecschö (1786). The place developed from an older settlement and belonged to the local noble family Kecsöi . After the Turkish looting in 1564, the village was depopulated and only repopulated 200 years later. In the second half of the 18th century, the revitalized place was owned by the Ragályi and Fáy families . In 1828 there were 45 houses and 238 inhabitants who were employed as lime burners, charcoal burners, blacksmiths and cattle farmers.

Until 1918/1919, the place in Gemer and Kleinhont counties belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. From 1938 to 1945 he was once again part of Hungary on the basis of the First Vienna Arbitration .

population

According to the 2011 census, Kečovo had 375 inhabitants, including 331 Magyars, 38 Slovaks, two Ukrainians, one Czech and one inhabitant of another ethnic group. Two residents did not provide any information about their ethnicity.

206 residents supported the Roman Catholic Church, 91 residents the Evangelical Church AB, 41 residents the Reformed Church, five residents the Evangelical Methodist Church, three residents the Jehovah's Witnesses and one resident of the Orthodox Church. 23 residents had no denomination and the denomination was not determined for five residents.

traffic

The main town can be reached via the 3rd order road 050148, while the cave and the nearby Domica-Aggtelek border crossing are accessible via the 2nd order road 587. In Plešivec , 13 kilometers away, there is a connection to the 1st order road 50 ( E 58 ).

The nearest train station is also in Plešivec, but only express trains stop there (as of the 2014/2015 timetable). Otherwise, public transport is limited to a regional bus route from Gemerská Hôrka and Plešivec, with stops at the cave and in the center of the village.
