.cy is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the Republic of Cyprus . It has existed since July 26, 1994 and is administered by the local University of Cyprus .
requirements
A .cy domain may only be applied for by persons or organizations who have a place of residence or a branch in the Republic of Cyprus. When registering, it is necessary to present a copy of the identity card or a valid extract from the Cypriot commercial register . Companies also have the restriction that no more than ten domains may be registered. Furthermore, the domain must correspond to the company or the name of a product.
In exceptional cases, the registry can waive the obligation to have a registered office in the Republic of Cyprus. At least the Admin-C must be domiciled in the Republic of Cyprus, although this activity can also be performed by a trustee . Addresses with generic or geographical terms (e.g. city names) are excluded from registration or reserved for the respective administrative authority.
A .cy domain can be between three and 63 characters long. The use of special characters is currently not possible. A change of owner is also not supported, so to transfer a domain must be deleted and requested again by the new owner.
Third level domain
In addition to domains on the second level, the registry also offers registration on the third level. These are aimed at certain institutions or industries:

- org.cy for non-profit organizations
- pro.cy for professional associations
- name.cy for natural persons
- ekloges.cy for organizations and people involved in elections

- press.cy for press organizations and publishers
- parliament.cy for parliament and its related persons
- com.cy for business enterprises
Others
In 2008, the top-level domain .cy attracted attention because, contrary to the trend in the industry, the registry did not increase prices but instead reduced them.
