.ie

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

.ie is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Ireland . It was introduced on January 27, 1988 and is administered by the IE Domain Registry (IEDR).

properties

Domains are only assigned on the second level. They can be between 3 and 63 characters long and contain only alphanumeric characters ; special characters based on the Punycode method are supported. Compared to other top-level domains, the criteria for registration are very strict: For example, companies have to submit an extract from the commercial register or, in the case of domains whose names are similar to their products, provide evidence of advertising and actual sales. A business relationship with Ireland must also be proven, unless there is already a branch in the country. Owners of a trademark registered in the European Union can easily register it as an .ie domain.

There have been isolated cases in which certain domains were rejected by the IEDR. The most prominent example is porn.ie , the award of which was refused in autumn 2006 because the domain contradicted public morals. A corresponding clause is provided in the official award criteria. Until 2007, according to the award criteria, it was also prohibited to register a domain that was in the name of a natural person .

distribution

In April 2007 75,000 .ie domains were registered, in October 2011 more than 170,000. Despite the strict allocation criteria, the top-level domain is one of the ccTLDs with the highest growth, with eight percent more addresses registered last year. In this way, the registry generated income of 2.6 million euros.

The security specialist McAfee selected .ie in December 2009 as the third most secure top-level domain. In 2012 a hacker succeeded in gaining access to the domain name server via the CMS Joomla , which was used to operate the registry's website . This enabled the resolution of popular addresses such as google.ie to be manipulated for a short time .
