.nz is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for New Zealand . This top-level domain was introduced on January 19, 1987 . It is technically managed on seven servers by InternetNZ Registry Services based in Wellington .

properties

A .nz domain can be between three and 63 characters long and only contain alphanumeric characters . The registry has been supporting the use of special characters since April 6, 2010 , but this function has not yet been implemented by many domain registrars . After ordering a new domain, it usually takes between eight days and two weeks for it to be successfully connected. This means that the registry works comparatively slowly compared to the competition - for example, a .de domain can often be reached after a few hours.

Initially, addresses were only assigned on the third level, for example below .co.nz. In June 2012 it became known that the New Zealand Domain Name Commission (DNC) intends to offer second level domains in the future after a short test phase. In October 2012, the DNC made a surprisingly negative statement about second-level domains : A public hearing showed that there were no reasons to change the previous practice. A final decision on the further procedure is to be made in 2013, until July owners of a domain can still comment on the introduction of addresses on the second level. In addition, a study by the Domain Name Commission Limited became known, according to which .nz would benefit from a corresponding change in the award criteria in the medium term.

In autumn 2013 it was finally announced that .nz wanted to introduce domains on the second level after all . According to media reports, the registry also wants to curb competition for the new top-level domain .kiwi . With the introduction of .nz domains, addresses such as .co.nz or .org.nz can still be used.
