.ke

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

.ke is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Kenya . It has existed since April 29, 1993 and is administered by the Kenya Network Information Center (KeNIC).

history

Initially, .ke was assigned to two private individuals. After several educational institutions and companies merged to form the KeNIC in May 2000 , the IANA assigned the top-level domain to the new registry. This gradually reduced the fees for .ke domains, most recently by three quarters in 2008.

Compared to other top-level domains, it is remarkable that no .ke domains can be registered with a hyphen if a variant without a separator already exists. Since 2009, the registry has been trying to curb the misuse of the top-level domain for phishing purposes, for example .

Up until 2017, domains were only registered on the third level. In 2017, the use of second-level domains was gradually introduced. First of all, trademark owners could register a domain with a corresponding name. This was followed by a phase in which domains that already existed on the third level were registered in the second level. So-called "Premium" domain names were recently auctioned off. The usual second-level registration has been possible since January 2018.
