.cc is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) of the politically Australia belonging Cocos . It has existed since October 13, 1997 and is administered by eNIC , a subcontractor of VeriSign which, among other things, manages the well-known .com domain .

properties

A .cc domain can be between one and 63 characters long. In contrast to most worldwide ccTLD domains, .cc domains are also possible using umlauts. Support for special characters was introduced on December 14, 2004. The registration of a .cc domain usually takes less than 24 hours and is open to any natural or legal person . A residence on the Cocos Islands is not necessary, not even for the administrative contact person (Admin-C).

use

The domain is specifically marketed as a second .com , and the various meanings of the acronym CC are used for advertising: The domain is often used as an abbreviation for Christian or Catholic churches (Christian Church, Catholic Church), cycling clubs and non-profit organizations Creative Commons , which promotes the free exchange of content on the Internet. Even among Northern Cypriots who do not have their own ccTLD (the most obvious .kk - for Turkish Kuzey Kıbrıs - does not exist, .nc - for English Northern Cyprus - is only accessible to residents of New Caledonia ) and therefore the official second-level domain .nc.tr under the Turkish TLD .tr , the .cc domain is popular. (The Greek part of Cyprus has the ccTLD .cy .)

The number of addresses under .cc far exceeds the population of the Cocos Islands. Another well-known example is the South Korean company, which owns the domain co.cc and sub-leases the subdomains , as it is similar to the second-level domain .co.uk. On July 7, 2011, this was removed from the Google index to prevent spam and phishing .

Others

In contrast to other top-level domains, the registry offers a tool that allows .cc domains to be assessed. Using automatically processed statistical criteria, interested parties should be able to assess the domain before registering. The so-called Verisign Domain Score supports English as well as German , Portuguese and Spanish .
