.is

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

.is is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Iceland . It was introduced on November 18, 1987 and is administered by the ISNIC registry .

properties

Registrations are carried out directly on the second level. Some registrars do not allow the registration of domain names in connection with sexual content. It is not necessary to reside or have a branch in Iceland. Domain owners only have to show a so-called agent who can also be located abroad, provided he has been officially accredited by the registry.

Only letters of the English alphabet, numbers, hyphens and the letters áéýúíóþæöð may be used in domain names, whereby a domain name may not begin or end with a hyphen and may not contain a hyphen in the third or fourth position. Likewise, the number of characters in a domain name including the ending .is is limited to 66 and the ASCII-compatible coding of an internationalized domain name is limited to 59. The domains net.is, com.is, edu.is, gov.is, org.is and int.is cannot be registered, but are reserved for possible future use.

safety

With .is there are so-called Very Important Domains , for which special conditions apply. The registry wants to ensure that particularly popular addresses (e.g. from large companies ) never expire and are accidentally deleted. The procedure is unique in comparison to other ccTLDs. In addition, ISNIC supports the so-called Dispute Lock , which prevents a change of the owner in the event of a legal dispute, provided that the latter can prove that there are proceedings in Iceland.

Domain lock

In October 2014, the ISNIC locked the first time a domain, the contents of the terrorist active militia Islamic State contained.
