.mx is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Mexico . It was introduced on February 1, 1989 and assigned to the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey .

history

From the beginning until 1996, the use of an .mx domain was reserved exclusively for the Mexican government and educational institutions . A system of second-level domains was then implemented, within the framework of which .edu.mx was intended for universities and similar organizations and .gob.mx as an extension for authorities. At the same time .mx was opened to companies and private individuals with the introduction of .com.mx or .net.mx .

Due to the ongoing criticism, the registry announced that it would again allow domains directly below .mx. As part of the liberalization in autumn 2009, owners of a third-level domain were granted the right to preferentially register the identical address on the second level ( grandfathering ).

properties

A .mx domain can be between three and 63 characters long and only contain alphanumeric characters ; internationalized domain names are not possible. Any natural or legal person may register an .mx domain; a place of residence or a branch in the country is not necessary.
