.ng
.ng is the country-specific top-level domain for Nigeria . It was awarded on March 15, 1995 and is administered by the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA) in Victoria Island .
history
The Yaba College of Technology was initially responsible for .ng, while the technical operation was carried out by the Instituto per le Applicazioni Telematiche in Italy, which is also involved in .it . In 2004, .ng was finally transferred to the National Information Technical Development Agency , which, however, also did not actively use the top-level domain and was criticized by ICANN .
NIRA has only been responsible for .ng since 2009, and domains could be registered automatically from March onwards. The restart of the extension was previously postponed so that citizens of the country could prepare for the introduction of .ng longer. The fees for a .ng domain on the second level were initially several thousand US dollars , so only a few companies took up the opportunity. Among other things, Google Inc. registered the domains google.ng and youtube.ng .
From introduction exist second-level domains such as .org.ng , until October 2011, .ng advertised to the public. Nevertheless, .ng domains are comparatively unpopular in Nigeria, instead .com and .co.uk are often used.
properties
A .ng domain can be between three and 63 characters long. In contrast to other country-specific top-level domains, registration is comparatively slow and takes up to seven days. In addition to alphanumeric characters , .ng also supports internationalized domain names for various languages, including German umlauts .
