.gr is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Greece . It was introduced on February 19, 1989 and is administered by the FORTH registry .

properties

A .gr domain may be between two and 63 characters long and only contain alphanumeric characters. The use of internationalized domain names , e.g. with characters from the Greek alphabet , is basically possible, but is not yet supported by all registrars . It was introduced on July 4, 2005, much earlier than many other ccTLDs. The connection of a .gr domain usually takes between two and six days.

Until August 2004, the registry assigned .gr domains only to people or companies from Greece and only assigned two addresses to each private person, or no more than ten addresses to companies. In the meantime, these restrictions have ceased to exist and .gr is expressly no longer required to be based in Greece. The administrative contact person ( Admin-C ) can also be resident in any country. The registry is known for its bureaucratic structures. Since October 2010 it has been possible to order domains electronically without a written application, but processing is still carried out on paper.

Registrations are possible on both the second and third level. There are various second-level domains , for example com.gr for commercial organizations, edu.gr for educational institutions, net.gr for Internet service providers or gov.gr for the government of Greece.

Others

The registry FORTH tried to introduce an internationalized top-level domain to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers . In April 2011 it was announced that this had been formally rejected, as the equivalent of .gr in the Greek alphabet would be very similar to .ea , although this top-level domain was not even assigned. Representatives of the Greek government protested to the US government , but in the end the internationalized domain was not introduced regardless.
