.ir is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Iran . It was introduced on April 6, 1994 and is administered by the Institute for Research in Fundamental Sciences (IRNIC) in the capital Tehran .

properties

An .ir domain can be between three and 63 characters long; the connection usually takes four days. For registration, companies are required to provide the commercial register number and, for private individuals, the ID number and the issuing authority.

The last known change to the award criteria took place in 2008. IRNIC attracted attention because at that time the fees for .ir domains were reduced while the majority of other ccTLDs became more expensive. As of May 2008, an estimated 90,000 addresses were registered under the top-level domain.

internationalization

The use of internationalized domain names was initially not supported, but is now possible. The IDN extension was adopted in October 2010 as part of the so-called IDN Fast Track Process of ICANN , in which India , Syria and Taiwan have also participated in addition to Iran . As of November 2012, however, the IDN domain had not yet been used. The internationalized version of .ir isایران.( .īrān ), whereby these are shown in Punycode in two variants for technical reasons.

In October 2011 it was announced that an application for the introduction of the advertised domain .iran had also been submitted as part of the newTLD program .

Specialized domains

There are a number of second-level domains that have a specific purpose:
