.za is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for South Africa ( Dutch Zuid-Afrika ). It was introduced by the IANA on November 7, 1990 and is now administered by the ZA Domain Name Authority , headquartered in Gauteng .

properties

While other second-level domains can be longer than 60 characters, a .za domain can only contain between three and 30 characters. It is also unusual that the allocation is carried out automatically, but can still take up to three days. Currently only alphanumeric characters can be used in an address; special characters as punycodes were not supported until December 2012.

arbitration

The registry of .za was one of the first organizations to develop an arbitration process for their top-level domain. After the introduction of the system was decided in 2006, the procedure formally entered into force in May 2007. It stipulates that clearly defined criteria are used to check whether a domain may infringe the trademark rights of other interested parties. If this is the case, the domain can, under certain circumstances, be revoked and given to another owner. The awarding authority emphasized that the arbitration should enable a particularly fast and cost-saving clarification of relevant problems.

New TLDs

In the course of the introduction of new top-level domains , the African Union officially supported the application of the registry for .za domains for the ending .africa . A dispute then broke out between the organization and its competitor DotConnectAfrica about the admissibility of this recommendation. In addition, the three largest cities in the country - Johannesburg , Durban and Cape Town - applied for their own generic top-level domains in the course of the process, which should also be operated by the registry of .za.
