.co is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Colombia . It has existed since December 24, 1991 .

In addition to its original meaning, .co is increasingly associated with the terms corporation , community , content and connection . Because of this, the registry specifically advertises the top-level domain as an alternative to .com , under which only a few short domains are still available.

history

The administration of the domain was initially taken over by the Universidad de los Andes . The university wanted to try in 2001 to market the domain. .co is attractive because its spelling is very similar to the existing .com and also represents a second-level domain for commercial companies for many country-specific top-level domains, e.g. B. in .uk as .co.uk . However, this was strictly rejected by the Colombian government. The university then wanted to give up the administration of the domain because it no longer saw itself in a position to do so. After eight years, the administration of the domain was finally taken over by the newly founded .CO Internet SAS .

properties

Under the leadership of the university, addresses could only be registered on the third level, and only citizens and companies of Colombia were allowed to register a .co address. Following the acquisition of the .co domain by the new contracting authority the registration was approved at the second level for each person. The previous addresses on the third level will initially be retained, the following domains exist on the second level:

  • .com.co for commercial companies
  • .edu.co for educational institutions
  • .gov.co for the Colombian government
  • .mil.co for the Colombian military
  • .net.co for internet service providers
  • .nom.co for private individuals
  • .org.co for non-profit organizations

Initially, only alphanumeric characters could be used for .co. Only since April 15, 2012 has the registry enabled the use of Chinese , Japanese and Korean characters. The introduction was carried out without a sunrise period , during which owners of existing addresses are usually preferred. In addition, characters from various European languages have been supported since mid-October 2013, including Russian , French , Portuguese , Polish , Latvian , Lithuanian and Hungarian as well as Spanish .

distribution

On the occasion of .co's second birthday, the registry published detailed statistics on the distribution of the domain. These show, for example, that 54 percent of all owners are based in the USA and only two percent of all registrations come from Germany . About three percent of all customers own between 11 and 50 .co domains.

Shortly after the award criteria were changed in July 2012, .co also achieved comparatively high sales on the Sedo trading platform , with prices well above those of other country-specific top-level domains. Experts .co sized a similarly significant as .com , as for example Amazon numerous addresses as a.co , k.co and z.co had bought. Better known was MySpace granted: The Social Network auctioned his .co domain for a multiple of the normal fees after the myspace.co during the so-called sunrise period was not requested.

The best-known .co address, which also has the most hits, is t.co from Twitter .
