history

The extension was introduced on December 1, 1992 and initially managed by the American company UUNET . In 1995, the Internet service provider Etisalat took over the business and in the course of this operated under the UAEnic brand . It was not until the beginning of 2008 that .ae was transferred to the state regulatory authority for telecommunications ( Telecommunication Regulatory Authority , or TRA for short), which is still responsible for .ae today. According to official information, the purpose of the change was to promote the spread of .ae domains.

The support of internationalized domain names was initiated in 2004 by UAEnic. The company developed the necessary technical platform together with the operators of the country-specific top-level domains of Qatar ( .qa ) and Saudi Arabia ( .sa ).

properties

A .ae domain may be between 2 and 63 characters long and not contain any umlauts . The assignment is completely automated and an .ae domain can be registered in real time. Almost every natural or legal person is allowed to register a .ae domain, only Israel is not recognized as a country.

Domains are assigned on both the second and third level. The latter are reserved for citizens and companies of the United Arab Emirates, and certain endings may only be used by state authorities. Basically, the following second-level domains exist: .ac.ae for educational institutions, .co.ae for companies, .gov.ae for the government and .mil.ae for the military, .net.ae for Internet service providers , .org .ae for non-profit organizations and .sch.ae for schools.
