Jon Robert Holden ( Russian Джон Роберт Холден ; born August 10, 1976 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) is a former Russian - American basketball player. In 2011 he ended his career.

career

In his home country, the United States, he studied and played at Bucknell University in the state of Pennsylvania between 1994 and 1998 . With 1327 points he was in 1998 on the ninth place of the eternal basket hunter list of the university team. He was later overtaken by the German Christopher McNaughton , who scored 1529 points for Bucknell. In the game years 1996/97 (17.8 points / game) and 1997/98 (18.2 points / game) Holden was the team's leading scorer.

Through the mediation of a Finnish players' agent, Holden came to ASK Brocēni-LMT Rīga ( Latvia ) in 1998 , where he received a salary of 1,600 US dollars per month. His compatriot Larry Daniels, who also played in Riga, made it easier for him to get used to it. There the American, known for his accuracy in throwing from distance, won the national championship as well as 2001 in Belgium with Telindus Oostende and the following year in Greece with AEK Athens . His year in Athens was seen as a big step in his career, as he played with significantly better teammates at AEK ( Dimosthenis Dikoudis , Jim Bilba , Nikolaos Zisis and others) than before and because he won the title with AEK on a European scale Top teams belonging to Panathinaikos Athens and Olympiacos Piraeus cheated. He then moved to the Russian top team CSKA Moscow . With the team he won the Russian championship in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 as well as the Russian Cup in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2010. At the international level he won the ULEB Euroleague in 2006 and 2008 , and in 2007 and 2009 he reached the final there with ZSKA.

CSKA applied for Russian citizenship for Holden and referred to a legal regulation according to which this can be issued "for special merit for the country". He received Russian citizenship in October 2003 by order of Vladimir Putin . The background was a new foreigner regulation in the Superleague Russia , which only allowed two US-Americans per team, as well as the lack of a good development player in the Russian national team. At that time, Holden hardly spoke a word of Russian, and Holden said he still felt himself to be a US citizen. With the Russian national team he took part in the European Championships in 2005 and 2007 , with 2007 winning the title and Holden making the decisive two-point throw in the final 2.1 seconds before the end. He also represented Russia in the 2008 Olympic Players .

After his playing career, he worked  as a player judge for the NBA team Philadelphia 76ers . In September 2019 he moved to the Brooklyn Nets , where he was responsible for player matters in a senior position.
