The state emirate society for telecommunications (proper name Etisalat , formerly Emirtel ) was founded after the decision of the Federal Law No. 1 of 1976 of the United Arab Emirates .

Market position

The company had a monopoly on all telephone services until 2006 and was the only licensed Internet provider in the country.

The government of the UAE decided in spring 2005 that from the beginning of 2006 further companies for telephone and Internet services can offer their services. Ecompany

The Internet access provider (100% subsidiary of Etisalat) bears the name ecompany (formerly Emirates Internet and Multimedia, or EIM for short). This holds the monopoly on all Internet connections. The DSL service is marketed under the name "Al Shamil".

Dial-up connections are time-bound, DSL connections are billed at a flat rate of AED 250 per month.
