.cd is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the Democratic Republic of the Congo . It has existed since August 20, 1997 and is administered by the public company Office Congolais des Postes et Télécommunications (OCPT) , part of the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications. In its role as a network information center , it appears publicly under the abbreviation CDNIC .

history

The top-level domain is the direct successor of .zr , which was previously used for the state of Zaire until it was renamed. Initially, .cd could not be used actively because there was no Network Information Center . As a result, in April 2004, both the German company Key-Systems and the so-called Congo Internet Management claimed the role of the registry. The first provider announced in 2001 that it would register .cd domains.

properties

Domains are registered on both the second and third level, officially there are six second-level domains: .com.cd , .net.cd , .org.cd , .edu.cd , .mil.cd and .ac.cd Domains . Internationalized domain names are not possible, only alphanumeric characters can be used. A .cd domain must be between one and 63 characters long, with certain three-letter words not being allowed. Other generic names or those that refer to other top-level domains or, for example, have religious references, are not possible.
