.jp is the country code top-level domain of the State Japan . It was introduced on August 5, 1986 and has been administered by Japan Registry Services ever since . The registry is headquartered in Chiyoda .

properties

In principle, any natural or legal person can register a .jp domain. A residence or branch office in Japan is not required. The use of non-alphanumeric characters is possible; internationalized domain names are fully supported in Japanese .

In addition to the top-level domain, there are numerous second-level domains :

  • .co.jp - company
  • .or.jp - legal persons
  • .ne.jp - Internet Service Provider
  • .ac.jp - Universities
  • .ad.jp - Members of JPNIC
  • .ed.jp - kindergartens and schools
  • .go.jp - government
  • .gr.jp - groups of people / companies
  • .lg.jp - local government

The move of a .jp-TLD must be carried out with the help of the so-called "REG-ID". The "REG_ID" is used in a similar way to the well-known "Authorization Code" and is requested from the current registrar.

meaning

In 2003 .jp was ranked fourth among the most popular top-level domains. In April 2007, over 900,000 addresses were registered at this address for the first time. At this point, .jp had fallen back to the tenth place of the world's most frequently registered domains. The top-level domain passed the one million address mark in 2011, and rose further to over 1.3 million by April 2013.

A study by McAfee from 2009 rated .jp as the most secure country-specific domain ever, even ahead of generic extensions like .edu .
