.edu

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

.edu is a generic top-level domain (gTLD). It was introduced on January 1, 1985 , making it one of the oldest endings ever. The non-profit organization Educause , based in Boulder, Colorado, is responsible for the administration of .edu . Until 2001, the operation was carried out by the commercial company VeriSign .

The abbreviation .edu stands for educational , in German for education . This indicates that the top-level domain is intended exclusively for organizations in the education system. Nowadays, only institutions from the United States are allowed to order .edu domains; the ending is not open to interested parties from other countries. The first ever .edu domain was assigned to the University of California at Berkeley on April 24, 1985 .

In the initial phase, organizations outside the US could also order an .edu domain, which is no longer possible today. However, addresses that have already been assigned still exist, for example the following universities have .edu domains:

In addition, addresses that were assigned before 2001 (deadline October 29) were continued even if it was not a post-secondary educational institution (“ grandfathering ”). Well-known examples are z. B. the Exploratorium in San Francisco ( www.exploratorium.edu ), the research group TECO (www.teco.edu) or the commercial company Academia.edu . To date, there are some commercial .edu addresses, including some that the US Department of Education has classified as “ suspect ”.
