Generic domain

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A generic domain (also: descriptive domain ) is a domain whose second-level domain component is a generic term ( generic is term).

These domains can precede any type of top-level domain (TLD).

Generic domains thus differ from domains that contain proper names or protected terms (e.g. wikipedia.org or microsoft.de ) or consist of fantasy names (e.g. uraragkux.de or haseciki.com ).

Depending on the commercial usability of the term in question, generic domains are very popular because they are self-explanatory and memorable and also often contain type-ins . For this reason, they are responsible for a large part of the trading volume in domain trading .

In addition, top-level domains - regardless of the preceding second-level domain - can also be generic (generic top-level domains, also abbreviated as gTLD ). Examples of this are TLDs such as .aero for companies in the aviation industry , .edu for organizations in the education system, .jobs for websites with job offers, .museum for museums , .travel for the travel industry or .xxx for websites with erotic and pornographic content.

Use as a company name

Before 2009, entry in the commercial register was often refused if the company name consisted of a generic domain. This changed, however, when the Frankfurt am Main district court rejected the refusal to register Tagesgeldkonto.de. Today this is no longer an obstacle.
