history

The company was founded in Augsburg in 1999 as booxtra GmbH & Co. KG. The first managing director was the journalist Klaus Driever , then head of the new media division at the Weltbild publishing group. In November 2001 the domain buecher.de, the brand and design rights to this brand and the company from Mediantis AG (formerly buecher.de AG) from Tutzing, affected by liquidation, were taken over . With the purchase of the much better known brand, Booxtra was able to multiply its sales.

The company has been run as buecher.de GmbH & Co KG since 2005 and achieved a turnover of 25 million euros this year. Managing Director Driever left his post at buecher.de in 2007 and Gerd Robertz took over as his successor. Sales rose in 2007 to EUR 31 million. Eight years later, Clemens Todd and Günter Hilger took over the management of buecher.de.

Buecher.de has been a partner in the Payback bonus program since the end of March 2017 .

Shareholder

Founding shareholders of the company (at that time still under the name booxtra) were T-Online International AG, Verlagsgruppe Weltbild GmbH, Holtzbrinck NetworXs GmbH (a subsidiary of the Stuttgart publishing group Georg von Holtzbrinck GmbH) and the Berlin publisher Axel Springer SE . T-Online got out in the spring of 2007, the remaining three shareholders have each held 33.3% since then. At the end of 2013, Weltbild took over the Holtzbrinck share. In 2014 Springer sold its stake to Weltbild, a company that is now part of the Droege Group . Special Multi Channel Holding, which belongs to the Droege Group, has been the company's sole shareholder since January 2017.

Products

With over ten million products, buecher.de is one of the leading German book and media retailers on the Internet. In addition to German-language titles, buecher.de also offers foreign-language titles and over 1.1 million e-books .

In addition to traditional sales , the online shop enables the private sale of used books, DVDs and CDs. Other offers from buecher.de are flower mediation , gift service, DVD rental, publication service, magazine subscription service as well as the sale of trips, toys, learning aids and tickets. In 2007 the online shop also provided around four million music downloads. Since July 2012 customers can download software from buecher.de.

Others

The buecher.de GmbH & Co KG is the initiator of the book checker motivate a project with the aim of schools or students to read books and reviews to write. Awards will be given to the classes with the best reviews. Since 2010, over 850 classes have taken part in the annual competition and submitted over 62,000 reviews.
