.ee

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

.ee is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Estonia . It has existed since July 3, 1992 and is administered by the Estonian Internet Foundation . In June 2012, more than 66,000 .ee domains were registered, around two percent of which contain special characters as part of the IDN program. This means that the proportion of internationalized domains is relatively high compared to other ccTLDs.

Award criteria

A .ee domain can be between two and 63 characters long and registration usually takes one week. In addition to alphanumeric characters , special characters can also be used in .ee domains, as the corresponding procedure for internationalized domain names has been supported since June 2011 . However, not every domain registrar supports this function. A residence or a branch office in Estonia has always been necessary to register a .ee domain , which is why many registrars offer their customers fiduciary management.

criticism

After the Estonian Internet Foundation took over the administration of .ee in July 2010, all domains registered up to then had to be re-registered. This led to severe criticism from the owners and registrars, as additional fees were incurred for re-ordering in addition to the administrative effort. In addition, only six months were allotted for this process.
