In total, an .lt domain can be between three and 63 characters long. In addition to alphanumeric characters , so-called internationalized domain names that allow special characters have also been supported since March 2004 . There are no special restrictions on the assignment: Any natural or legal person can register an .lt domain without having to show a place of residence or a branch in the country. The administrative contact person may also be based outside of Lithuania. Only the use of a domain for pornographic or criminal purposes is not permitted.

In domain trading , the top-level domain plays practically no significant role. The most expensive .lt domain ever sold was poker.lt , which changed hands in 2009 for 10,000 euros.
